Since the end of quotas in 2017 the EU sugar market has become one of the most open in the world, exposed to global market distortions and declining domestic consumption. With low- and duty-free import availability set to reach 1.69M tonnes (over 12% of EU demand) by 2027/28, the limit has been reached. Against this backdrop, CEFS sets out seven priorities for EU Trade Policy to safeguard Europe’s domestic beet sugar sector while ensuring imports meet adequate environmental, social and food safety standards.
